Why this guide exists
Most Berlin Wall content online collapses into one of two things: a five-minute overview mentioning Checkpoint Charlie and a photo of a mural, or a dense academic history with no travel logistics attached. Kontrollpunkt was built to sit between those — six real, physically distinct sites, chosen specifically because each shows a different part of what the border actually was, with the transit routes, costs, and timing left in rather than assumed.
The six sites here aren't the only Cold War-related places in Berlin worth seeing, but they're the ones that, together, cover the physical barrier, the art that followed it, the diplomatic confrontation, the human cost, the intelligence war, and the surveillance apparatus behind it — without requiring a week in the city to see them all.
This is an independently maintained, unofficial guide. It has no relationship with any of the memorials, museums, or transit authorities it describes, and no financial arrangement with any of them. If something here is out of date — an opening hour, a ticket price, a transit change — let us know.
